Damn Dutch: Pennsylvania Germans at Gettysburg

Co-authored with David L. Valuska (Mechanicsburg, PA: Rowman & Littlefield/Stackpole Books), 2004

Analyzes the role of two ethnically German groups of Pennsylvanians before, during, and after the pivotal Gettysburg campaign of July 1863: the Pennsylvania “Dutch” (descended from colonial-era German immigrants) and the recently emigrated German-Americans of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The book examines these two groups militarily, socially, politically, and most importantly, ethnically within the context of Gettysburg and the greater Civil War.
